Tiernan had visited, possibly, every room in the complex on his way to find Jonathan and those who were working with him. He had so many questions for everyone, and in almost every place, admiration of his dragon had given way to people asking what they could do for him. He knew that question was often a polite way for an adult to ask him to stop talking and leave, but the questions had kept coming to his mind. He didn’t seem to be able to stop asking them, even when he could tell the adults wanted him to leave them to their work.

One dwarven smith had paid him two gold coins to move along to the next room, and now Tiernan was absentmindedly rubbing them together in his right hand as Esmerelda walked lazily down the tunnels with him. Another dwarven smith, in the room after the one who had paid him coins, had also asked the question on so many lips today.

“What can I do for you?”

“Hi, can you give me something?”

The dwarf had awkwardly suggested she might be able to and asked what Tiernan wanted. He told her lots of things that he wanted, but she said she didn’t have any dragon eggs, or a suit of armor his size, or a sword that could leap from his hands at a word and instantly destroy an enemy with magic, and not even an emerald sword that never breaks. She had paid him another gold coin to move along too.

In a larger room where the man with the long green cape who had brought them here was working, Tiernan had asked about the purple, glowy stone everyone had been looking at. He was pretty sure it was interesting to look at, but basically useless, and they wouldn’t even let him touch it, not even once. However, when a pretty lady with short, dark hair had asked him why he wasn’t with his mother, and Tiernan had said she was trying to fix his Daddy’s dragon, because it was broken, she had given him something she called a dragon stone.

He looked at the small rock that he now held in his left hand. It was beautiful. The stone was blue and orange inside. It glowed faintly and reminded Tiernan very much of a dragon scale. It had one little sphere inside that was really dark, and it kept drawing Tiernan’s eye toward it whenever he looked at the stone long enough. The pretty lady had told him to keep it close to remember his father’s dragon.

Tiernan was remembering. Not just the way the dragon looked, but how his father had looked when he had come back through the portal earlier today. His mother had said he should give the healer’s some space, so he didn’t want to go back and check on him yet. He felt funny in his chest and stomach, but couldn’t think why. He was just starting to feel a few tears sting at his eyes when a humming portal opened suddenly right in front on him in the empty tunnel.
